Description: This paper presents a geospatial assessment of vertebrate biodiversity (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) in the Danube region using GIS-based methods. The authors developed a 10-point species richness index across 200 hexagonal sampling units to analyze spatial biodiversity patterns. The study revealed critical areas for biodiversity conservation, the degradation of steppe ecosystems, and gaps in the regional protected area network. It proposes new reserves and corridors as part of a unified ecological framework to support conservation strategies.
