Description: Sturgeons are among the most threatened groups of animals globally. Once present in most large river basins and all coastal waters of Europe, they have become extinct in many rivers due to drastic overfishing and habitat loss. Only the Danube and the Rioni Rivers have maintained reproducing populations. Out of the eight sturgeon species historically present in Europe, seven are critically endangered (IUCN Red List) and all are reported to be in unfavorable conservation status under the EU Habitats Directive. To reverse this situation, recovery measures and release programs are ongoing in several rivers. EU funding instruments such as the LIFE Programme have been supporting projects across Europe.
